Ibn Mas’ud (May God be pleased with him) narrates:
The Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) said:
“The Devil and the appointed Angel penetrate man’s heart and evoke a few things there.
The whispering of Satan is a call to evil, encouraging things that will have unpleasant and harmful results, and denial of the truth, detracting from right.
The work of the angel is to call to right and benefit, goodness, and to ward off evil.
So he who finds the whispering of right, benefit and goodness inside him, know that this is from God so let him praise and thank God.
He who finds the whispering of malice and denial inside him, let him leave there immediately and seek refuge with God from Satan.”
To these words the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) added this verse:
“(Satan) threatens you with poverty and pushes you to stinginess” (Surah al-Baqara
, 2/268)
