- Hz. Aisha (RA) narrates: “The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to speak slowly; it was so slow that if someone were to count the words, he could do so. He did not utter words one after another as you do.” (Bukhari)
- The apostle of God (PBUH) did not use to speak in a hasty manner; he used to speak one by one so that anyone could understand. (Tirmidhi)
WHEN SOMEONE CALLS YOU, THE ANSWER SHOULD BE “YES”
- Hz. Aisha (RA) narrates: “I have not seen anyone who has high ethics as the apostle of God (PBUH). Whenever a companion of him or a member of his family called him, he always answered, “Yes!” (Abu Naim, Isfahani)
IMPORTANT EXPRESSIONS ARE REPEATED THREE TIMES
- Hz. Anas Ibn Malik (RA) narrates: “The apostle of God (PBUH) used to repeat his expression three times so that it is memorized. (Tirmidhi)
SEPAKING LOUDLY IS NOT APPROVED
- Hz. Aisha narrates: “The apostle of God (PBUH) never uttered any vulgar expressions. He never attempted to do so. He also avoided speaking loudly in bazaars, in a way to disturb the people… He could not look at the face of anyone for a long time because of his shyness. When he was obliged to express an unpleasant thing, he used to narrate it with an allegory.” (Tirmidhi)
IT IS BETTER TO REMAIN SILENT WHEN SOMEONE IS OBLIGED TO SAY “NO”
- The apostle of God (PBUH) hardly ever said “No”. When someone wanted him to do something, he used to say “yes” if he wanted to do it. If he did not want to do it, he remained silent. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)
NOT TO TALK UNLESS IT IS NECESSARY
- How happy he is who is in possession of his tongue. (Tirmidhi)
- He who wants to be in peace must remain silent. (Ibn Abi’d-Dünya)
- He who believes in God and the hereafter should either speak the good or remain silent. (Tirmidhi)
- Anas Ibn Malik (RA) narrates: “The apostle of God came across with Abu Dharr and said to him: “O Abu Dharr! Shall I inform you two things that are easier and more rewarding than other things? Abu Dharr: “Inform me, O apostle of God”. The apostle of God (PBUH) said: “Having high ethics and talking a little and remaining silent. I swear by God through whose power and will I live that humans have no such beautiful deeds other than these ones.” (Ibn Abi’d-Dünya)
THE PERSON WHO BECOMES A JUDGE SHOULD TALK TO THE BOTH SIDES WITH THE SAME TONE
- Anyone from you who is going to judge among Muslims should talk to the both sides with the same tone. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)
THE PERSON WHO FORGETS WHAT TO SAY SHOULD RECITE SALAWAT
- When someone forgets something that he wants to say, he should utter salawat. It is certain that the salawat for me is the successor of his word. And it is hoped that this may help him to remember what to say. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)
SECRET TALKING
- When there are three people together, two of them should not speak secretly; this will upset the other one. (Bukhari)
- When three people come together, two of them should not speak secretly and leave the third one alone. (Bukhari, Adab-ul Mufrad)
THE WORD OF A PERSON BECOMES A TRUST IF HE GLANCES AROUND
- When someone says something and checks his surrounding upon it, that word becomes a trust; it must be kept secret. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)
EAVESDROPPING IS HARAM
- In the hereafter, molten lead will be poured into the ear of the person who tries to listen to a group of people who do not want it. (Bukhari)
- Do not interfere in the two people who are talking secretly. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)
PARADISE IS GUARANTEED FOR THE PERSON WHO IS IN POSSESSION OF HIS TONGUE
- Whoever gives me guarantee about the thing between his upper and lower chin along with the thing between his two legs, I will give guarantee him Paradise too. (Bukhari)
THE RIGHT TO SPEAK BELONGS TO THE ELDERS
- Let elders start to speak (Bukhari)
IT IS ENOUGH AS A SIN TO TRANSMIT EVERYTHING YOU HEAR
- It is enough as a sin for a person to transmit everything he hears. (Abu Dawud)
SPEAK A LITTLE EXCEPT MENTIONING GOD ALMIGHTY
- Do not speak too much except mentioning GOD ALMIGHTY because talking too much without remembering GOD hardens the heart. (Tirmidhi)
TALKING WITHOUT THINKING IS DANGEROUS
- A person might utter such an unpleasant word which is disliked by GOD that he goes to Hell because of that. (Bukhari)
A TALEBEARER IS DEPRIVED OF PARADISE
- A talebearer cannot enter Paradise (Muslim)
WHAT IS BACKBITING?
- The apostle of God (PBUH) asked “What is backbiting?” The companions answered: “God and His Apostle know it better”. The Apostle of God (PBUH) answered: “Backbiting is talking about your Muslim brother in a way that he/she will not be happy with what is said about him/her. Upon this, they asked, “If the person owns the qualities that are mentioned?” The apostle of God (PBUH): “If what is said is present in that person, you are considered to have backbitten him otherwise you are considered to have slandered. (Muslim)
THE QUESTION IS ASKED IN ORDER TO LEARN
- A person should ask his/her brother in order to learn not to be obstinate with each other. (Tirmidhi)
HOW WOULD YOU ANSWER WHEN YOU ARE ASKED A QUESTION WHOSE ANSWER YOU DO NOT KNOW?
- A person should answer a question only if he knows it very well; otherwise, he should say “GOD knows the best”. (Tirmidhi)
ONE THIRD OF KNOWLEDGE IS SAYING “I DO NOT KNOW”
- Knowledge has three parts. The Glorious Qur’an, the Sunnah and saying “I do not know”. (Tirmidhi)
