BODY CLEANING IN GENERAL
- Cleanliness which is the necessity of Fitrah (the Islamic concept of human nature) is five: to be circumcised, removing pubic hair, trimming the moustache, clipping nails, shaving armpit hair. (Bukhari)
- Hz. Anas Ibn Malik (RA) narrates: The apostle of God (PBUH) ordered us to perform the following without exceeding forty days; tidying the moustache, clipping nails and shaving armpit hair and pubic hair. (Muslim)
- Clip your nails and bury them into the soil. Clean the parts between fingers. Clean your mouth from the remains of food and brush with miswaq. Do not come to me with yellow teeth and along with a bad breath. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)
THE STANDARD IN TRIMMING THE MOUSTACHE
- Trim your moustache in the length of your lip. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)
- He who does not shorten his moustache is not from us. (Mu’jamus-Saghir)
HAIR CARE
- Jabir Ibn Abdullah (RA) narrates: “The apostle of God (PBUH) saw a dishevelled man whose hair was disordered and said: Why do you make yourself ugly?” and he beckoned him to shorten his hair (Mu’jamus-Saghir)
- Ata Ibn Yasar (RA) narrates: A dishevelled man whose hair was disordered came to the apostle of God (PBUH). By signing with his hand, the apostle of God (PBUH) ordered the man to tidy his hair. Then the apostle of God (PBUH): “Is this form not better than coming with a disordered hair like Satan? (Muwatta)
- Abu Qatada (RA) narrates: I said, “O apostle of God!” I have abundant hair extending over my shoulders, should I comb and tidy my hair?” He answered “Yes”, show kindness to your hair.” Due to the Prophet's word, “show kindness to your hair”, Abu Qatada combed his hair two times a day and oiled them. (Muwatta)
DYEING HAIR
- Jabir Ibn Abdullah (RA) narrates: “Abu Quhafa (the father of Abu Bakr), was taken to the apostle of God (PBUH) on the day when Mecca had been conquered. His hair was white like snow. The apostle of God (PBUH): “Take him to the one of his wives so that they will change the color of his hair and beard but avoid dyeing it black.” (Ibn Majah)
ORAL CLEANING AND MISWAQ
- Miswaq is a tool for cleaning the mouth. And it is a means of getting the consent of Allah (SWT) (Nasai)
- Hz. Aisha (RA) narrates: The apostle of God always had his miswaq and comb with him and looked in the mirror when he combed his blessed beard. (Mawahib al-Ladunniyya)
- Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (RA) narrates: “The apostle of God (PBUH) came to us and said: Among my ummah those who are cleaned well are the best people.” The Companions asked: “O apostle of God? Who are they?” Upon this, he answered: “They are the ones who are cleaned well during the ablution (wudu), cleaned well after eating. Cleaning well in ablution is washing the mouth and nose properly and not to let any dry parts between fingers. And cleaning well in eating is cleaning the teeth from leftovers because the two angels who are present near man will loathe him if they see the leftovers of man who prays (performs salah).” (Tabarani)
- Clip your nails and bury them into the soil. Clean the parts between your fingers. Clean your mouth from leftovers and use miswaq. Do not come to me while having a bad breath and with yellow teeth. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)
- Miswaq increases man’s talent of talking effectively. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)
- Halil Ibn Zayd al-Juhani narrates: “The apostle of God never came to salah without using miswaq. (Tabarani)
- Use miswaq because it is a tool that cleans the mouth and lets man have the consent of ALLAH. Gabriel advised me to use miswaq whenever he came to me. It was so frequent that I feared that it would become fard for me and for my ummah. If I had not feared that it would be a burden for my ummah, I would have let it be fard to use miswaq. (Ibn Majah)
- Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RA) narrates: “The apostle of God (PBUH) used to pray tahajjud at nights by giving salam in every two rakas; he used miswaq at the end of every two rakat after giving salam.” (Ibn Majah)
TO HAVE A TATTOO DONE
- The curse of ALLAH is upon the one who does tattoos and the one who has a tattoo done! (Bukhari)
PLUCKING WHITE STRANDS OF HAIR OR BEARD IS NOT PERMISSIBLE
- Do not pluck the white strands because they are light on the Judgment Day. (Ibn Hibban)
HOW TO GET A HAIR CUT?
- One day the apostle of God (PBUH) saw a child whose half of hair had been cut and the rest had been left uncut. He forbade the child’s family to do like this and said to them: “You should either cut the whole or leave the whole.” (Abu Dawud)
- Do not cut one part of your hair and leave the rest as a tuft. (Bukhari)
IT IS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR WOMEN TO GET THEIR HAIR CUT COMPLETELEY
- Hz. Ali (RA) narrates: “The Apostle of God (PBUH) forbade women to get a complete haircut (unless there is a necessity).” (Nasai)
